Statement from Rep. Ed Orcutt on passage of the state income tax legislation (Senate Bill 6346)
Rep. Ed Orcutt, R-Kalama and ranking Republican on the House Finance Committee, released the following statement on the passage of the state income tax legislation in the Washington State House of Representatives. Senate Bill 6346 passed on a 51-46 after a non-stop, 24-hour floor debate.
“The income tax is unstable and will make budgeting harder in future years — not easier. The voters have rejected the income tax many times — as they should. The Legislature has made so many changes to tax policy in recent years to fill budget holes that the only conclusion is that thresholds will be lowered in the near future to capture more taxpayers. And, this doesn’t solve the underlying problem of overspending. There is no tax or combination of taxes that can keep up with a Legislature that constantly overspends its revenue.”
